Captain America: The Winter Soldier Movie Review

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Movie Review

Spoiler Free

The third installment of Marvel's Phase Two project brought us a closer look at Marvel's Captain America. Our first look at Cap since the origin story in Captain America: The First Avenger, and his role as team leader in Avengers, this film begins with a look at Cap handling a little down time, though the pace quickly picks up.
We also get some great character building with Steve and Black Widow. This soon leads into some S.H.I.E.L.D intrigue, and the movie shifts to a breakneck pace. The mysterious (unless you read comics, picked up an issue of Empire Magazine or read the names of the cast) Winter Soldier enters the fray soon after, and the stage is set for a world devastating, status quo altering showdown.

While both of the previous films showed us Steve Rogers as a soldier, we didn't see a whole lot of super. The Winter Soldier quickly rectifies this, portraying Cap as clearly head and shoulders over his opponents, while reminding us that he's not invulnerable. They strike a perfect balance between peak human and super human. The movie also introduces several new characters, such as Batroc the Leaper, Crossbones, Agent 13, and the Falcon who serve to flesh out Cap's corner of the Marvel Universe. This coupled with a plot with far reaching ramifications makes this movie a must see.

In summary, this was easily one of Marvel's best offerings yet. I would have liked to see more of the Falcon, and perhaps some small reference to Redwing. Some understandable changes were made to the Winter Soldier's back story, although no reference is made to his Soviet background. It also would have been nice to see a bit more traditional looking Dr. Zola, although I did appreciate the cameo and the role he played. All this aside, the movie represented a huge step forward for the Marvel Movie verse, and was a hugely entertaining film.

10/10
