Thor: The Dark World Movie Review

Thor: The Dark World
Movie Review

After the massive battle with the Chitauri in New York, Thor 2 centers more around Asgard. We pick up with Thor helping to repair damage resulting from events in the first Thor film. With a cosmic event about to come to pass, and an ancient evil resurgent, Thor must join with the unlikeliest ally to prevail.

The biggest strength of this movie is that it showed that it could matter on its own without serving as mere setup for Avengers 2. I walked out of this movie much more interested in Thor's world and its characters than before. This is an important step forward since something has to support Marvel's cinematic universe between Avengers Movies.

The character work in this film was great. The banter between Thor and the other characters, as well as some small moments served to make him feel like a relatable character. Loki was in rare form in this movie, and in my opinion, completely stole the show. Duplicitous and yet sympathetic, he lent a complexity to the movie. One character in particular, who was little more than an extra in the first film was really made to shine this time around, and becomes a driving force behind the plot.

In summary, this movie was everything a Marvel film should be, paying great homage to the characters and stories a referenced, while building the greater universe around it. The characters all felt true and if I have one complaint, its that the villains story felt somewhat generic, and although well executed I didn't feel sympathetic towards them or their cause. That said, a lot was crammed into this movie, and I'm not sure there was time forvextensive villain rationale.

9.5/10
